Kumu Hula Kawaikapuokalani Hewett dancing

Kawaikapu Hewett is most well known as a Haku Mele (composer). He has written over 100 songs and chants - more than any other living Hawaiian composer. Founder and Directer since 1978 of Kuhai Halau O Kawaikapuokalani Pa Olapa Kahiko (Hula group for experiencing ancient dance), he was also the Spiritual Director of the Waimanalo Health Clinic on Oahu for many years.

His teachers include his grandmother, Iwa Kanae, Aunty Emma DeFries, Iolani Luahine, and Edith Kanaka'ole. Kawaikapu Hewett shares much of his family's background and values. He is a delight to be with and enjoys "playing" as well as teaching.

Although he mostly teaches trained teachers, these hula workshops presented by Aloha International provide a unique opportunity for hula dancers at all levels to learn directly from a true master of the art.

EWE O KA HULA 2014 will be Loea's third time teaching in Europe! We are very happy to facilitate these workshops so that students who perhaps might not be able to study with Loea in Hawaii will have an opportunity to do so closer to home.

The tuition fees for the 2014 workshops in Euros are listed below. For the residential Lucerne workshop please book accommodation directly with Brigitta Achermann at brigitta@hulahawaii.ch. The first day of each workshop will be dedicated to improving our execution of Hula steps, posture and hand movements. This is a great way to start for both new and experienced dancers! Those who are new to this lineage of Hula will get a chance to step in to the basics of Loea's tradition before we start learning a dance and the rest of us will be amazed at how much we can improve!
